Psychology of Colour

The psychology of colour is fascinating and the specific ability of bright colours to instantaneously make me feel better, happier, sexier, etc always amazes me!

Last week I was feeling completely BLAH! Being at home from work sick gave me the opportunity to sort through my nail polish collection. Amongst my older collection I found a sexy, sophisticated red colour - OPI Quarter Of A Cent-Cherry.

I can't remember when I got this shade, but it was released to celebrate OPI's 25th anniversary. According to OPI's website, OPI was founded in 1981, thus making my nail polish approximately 9 years old!!! Yikes - where did all that time go??

Amazingly this polish still seemed in perfect condition so I applied it to my nails to perk myself up, out of my BLAH state. And it worked! It's very hard to feel BLAH when wearing such a bright, sexy and sophisticated colour!

Maybe nail bars should be set up in doctor's waiting rooms and hospitals as therapy! Just a thought!

Do you use colour to perk yourself up when feeling BLAH?

  1. Colour totally perks me up. I have been adding more of it to our house over the last 2 years and love it. How on earth did you do such a perfect home manicure? Jealous!

    1. I've been trying to gradually alter the colour schemes in our house also to brighter colours. At the moment bright flowers (gerberas) are helping.

    1. Anything bright works for me too! Doesn't have to be nails or lipstick.

  4. Love a burst of colour but trying to give my nails a break at the moment. One shellac too many, which has my nails at breaking point.

    1. Shellac has wrecked my nails in the past also. I'd only shellac them again prior to going away on holidays and even then I'd have to seriously think about it first.

  5. It's a nice shade but I have short nails and (may) bite them so only use polish on my toenails. I don't worry too much in winter but do like bright (or different - black, blue, purple) colours on my toenails in summer!

    1. Having short nails myself used to stop me from applying nail polish but then I figured my nails are never going to be the long nails I admire on others, so seeing as nail polish makes me happy I just paint them whether they're short or not!

  10. Great idea! And I love that you don't have long nails either! I always think it's not worth bothering painting my short nails, but if it makes me feel good, I should give it a whirl on those down days!

    1. Unfortunately I'll never have the beautiful long nails I admire on others, so I just work with what I've got!

  12. Colour totally helps me when I'm feeling blah! I suck with a nail polish brush but dressing in brights helps me a lot! Blue is my favourite!

  14. I'd say Yes, I do use color to perk myself up. Usually its a bright lipstick. :-) That OPI polish did well to last so long! Most of my polishes go off after a few years. x

    1. I think the reason it lasted so well for so long is because I hadn't used it much over the years. I'll have to make up for that now ;)

  15. It's such a pretty colour so I can see how this would have helped your mood! I don't really use colours to perk myself up.. I'm one of those bad people who rely on junk food haha. Although I suppose I never thought about a bright mani... might try that next time instead ;) xx

  27. Nothing like a bit of colour to lift your mood. I also have short nails and mostly paint colour on my toes, but have just purchased a pot of silver glitter polish to wear to the SHINE cocktail party at Problogger next week. I don't get out much - so it will be the social event of the season for me. Need to look my best :-)

  37. I often sport ridiculous colours on my nails, sometimes all at the same time. I love yellow especially and blue from time to time. Your scarlet is lovely. x

  38. Gorgeous hue Ingrid. My perk me up colour is a bright orange or pink. Colour is the best kind of therapy! Xx

  39. Love me a pop of colour. My hands are too hardworking for colour to last too long, but I do like to perk up from the bottom up, and love a splash of colour on my toes. Bold reds and fuschia pinks are my go-to colours! I love this shade... I wonder if you can still get it?
